Eight hours, thirty-four lessons, six downloads. Joins, groups, and the four query shapes that cover most of what anybody is actually asked for at work. No database administration, because you are not going to be doing any.
Written as tasks, because that is how you will be asked.
Pull a report nobody has built yetWithout asking an engineer
Join four tables and trust the answerIncluding when rows go missing
Explain why two dashboards disagreeThe most useful hour of the course
Write a query somebody else can readFormatting, naming, and comments
Spot a query that will take an hourBefore you run it on production
Say no to a badly framed questionPolitely, with a better one
Thirty-four lessons
1. Getting a database in front of you
Four lessons, 38 minutes. No installation - the exercises run in the browser, and the download is there if you want it locally.
2. SELECT, WHERE and the first surprise
Six lessons, 1h 04m. Where NULL breaks your filter, demonstrated before it is explained.
3. Joins, drawn rather than described
Seven lessons, 1h 22m. Inner, left, and the one that silently multiplies your rows.
4. Grouping and aggregation
Six lessons, 1h 10m. GROUP BY, HAVING, and why your total is bigger than the sum of its parts.
5. The four query shapes
Five lessons, 58m. Ninety percent of real requests fit one of these.
6. Making it readable
Three lessons, 26m. Formatting, CTEs and naming things for the person who inherits it.
7. The final exercise
Three lessons, open-ended. A real question, a real dataset, and a human marks it.
Who teaches it
INSTRUCTOR
Marcus Bell
Eleven years writing reporting queries for people who did not want to learn SQL, which is the best possible training for teaching it to people who do. He answers every question in the course forum himself and the answers are usually longer than the question.
